The COVID-19 pandemic has limited the number of mass gatherings occurring across the country. The limited number of events in addition to work from home orders has led to fewer mass shootings so far in 2020.
The Violence Project’s James Densley and Jillian Peterson addressed the concern of mass shootings returning as states reopen. “There is reason to be concerned that this is kind of a perfect storm of people in crisis,” said Peterson. Densley elaborated on mental health challenges being exacerbated by the pandemic, “You’ve got a lot of alienated and frustrated individuals who have been cooped up at home and perhaps have been using this time to be online, getting radicalized.”
