The livestreamed video of Wednesday’s deadly shooting in Halle, Germany has potentially been viewed by millions of people after being posted on the Twitch gaming platform. A Twitch spokesperson has said that “Twitch has a zero-tolerance policy against hateful conduct, and any act of violence is taken extremely seriously.”
After the Christchurch massacre was livestreamed in March, social networks have been using artificial intelligence to find violence on livestream. The Violence Project’s Jillian Peterson discussed how perpetrators are taking advantage of social media to find large audiences, “Social media — and now livestreaming services — have given perpetrators a larger stage and wider audience. Perpetrators are looking to show their grievance to the world, and livestreaming gives them the means to do it.”
