Active shooter drills are designed to prepare staff and students for a school shooting. These drills are practiced in the name of safety and to set parents’ minds at ease about sending their children to school.
The Violence Project’s Jillian Peterson discusses the risk of contagion that accompanies mass shootings and active shooter drills, as well as contracts student mental health against preparedness.
“It’s important to put mass shootings in context. How much more likely are you to die from suicide? It’s a much bigger risk. If we put as many resources into preventing suicide, we’d see better outcomes. We’ve chosen to focus on this but, in the grand scheme of risk, this is just not a big one.”
